What is 'Baby Proofed' to you?
I see so many Moms on here stating that it's okay for them to fall asleep on the couch while their children play because their homes are baby/child proofed, but what does that really mean you to? Surely there is STILL a way for your child to get into something that he / she shouldn't be getting into.. or falling off of something (couch, chair, table..) that he / she shouldn't be climbing on but most likely will. Im just curious. No bashing. I am actually in the process of needing to Baby proof. My girl is now crawling and discovering that she can get to things that she normally couldn't (the cabinet with all of our dvds is the most recent..lol)!
answer:
lol... first off... my roddler is 4.. the baby is 2... so its not like they are itty bitty kids... second... my house isnt baby proofed... it's danger proofed... but thats to keep the litle kids safe as well as the older ones.. and DH and i... but the kids know what they can and can't do... they know what will hurt them and what won't... i dont trust baby proofing...
btw... it wasnt a real question... i was just bored and wanting to make people debate something obvious....

In this case it would be me in my bedroom, nothing to climb on, nothing to reach, door shut and a few safe toys. In this senario, I have fallen asleep. I make sure there is nothing there that can be dangerous, there are no cords, there are no plug ins that can be reached by a child. Most of my house is very safe, everything way out of reach but If im going to fall asleep while she plays its in my locked bedroom and I keep the rest of the doors of the house shut as well just in case somehow she excaped.
Making sure all furnature is attached to the wall (so it doesn't fall on them)
Keeping all chemicals up high and out of site
Keeping all breakables up high and out of site
Those plug in protector thingys
gates at the top and bottom of the stairs
A lock on the front door (perferably at the top) that keeps them from escaping

Baby proofing to me is putting safety plug-ins in all reachable outlets; harsh chemical cleaners are put up on a high, unreachable self; kitchen knifes and other sharp utensils are out of reach; front and back doors are locked at all times; pens and pencils are out of reach; any small objects that could be possible choking hazards are always kept up.
All sockets have covers, the cabinet locks, door knob covers, we are completely child proofed... No hanging anything from blinds.. and blah blah blah
well I never eally went crazy with baby proofing.. I tried the outletcovers but they just drew my kids attentionto the outlets and then he was there messing with the covers. When I took them off, he left the dam things alone so I thru out the covers.
I have no plants or breakable vases etc so that wasnt a worry, I bought a gate to put it in my hallway and I made sure there was no small things around that they would choke on. Other than that, I just let them roam and taught them what not to touch.
They were fine. My oldest still managed to fall down a flight of stairs at 9 mos, my other son swallowed a quarter and had to go to er but he was 4 already and my daughter.. well she is a climber so even though shes 3 now I still have to keep a good eye on her or shes gonna be standing on the counter trying to get something from the top of the fridge.
I have fallen asleep when I was pregnant with my 3rd and my older ones were 3 and 1. I would just pass out sometimes lol I was tired.. They survived. I wouldnt recommend it but its not like I planned on passing out on the couch.

Ugh..I rarely fall asleep while my kids 2.5 an 18 months old are awake... when i was pregnant i dosed off for just a few seconds woke up to find my 14 month old (at the time) gone, I seached the house screamed, cried, I was in panic.. He opened the door, and was sitting in the grass playing..
I now if i ever "think" i would fll asleep make sure all windows are door s are locked.
I have all outlets covered, but they both can remove the covers.. the spoons knifes ect, they FIND a way to get in them, they both move the chairs and clibm, i have the locks on cabnets, that is the only thing they havent figured out yet. Child proof to me is a joke... My kids are master minded and can get past about anything out there. But they are never left un supervised for more than a few seconds.
I dnt think i personaly could let my kids play outside by theri self i freak out.
