If you have 2 or more children, is it practical to buy a computer for each of them plus one for yourself?
For children under 10.

My BIL has 2 children (4 and 7 years old) and 3 new top of the line computers in the home. He was just complaining about shelling out the money. =/ I'm afraid he might buy one for the bathroom next. Is this necessary? Is it necessary for older kids to have their own computers or should they just take turns?

I have no idea as I have an only child who is too little.

If the children are in school (grade 3 and above), it's nice when they have their own computers. Our elementary school expects the 3rd graders to type their reports and projects and kids that age type sooo slowly! I didn't want my computer to be tied up for hours just because my child needs to type a paragraph (I went through that with my older child). content from pregnancy question and answersRenting&RealEstate

Our children typically get my cast-offs. My teen got my old computer when she entered 6th grade and I upgraded. When it started messing up (blue screen of death 3 times per hour) and I was too lazy to fix it, I bought her a new one. It was one of the better low end desktops. When my youngest entered 3rd grade, I finally got around to fixing my old computer. It works great now and my 8-year-old is proud of having her own.

I think, it's a waste of money to buy top of the line computers unless you are a serious gamer or need the computer to run demanding programs. I have a mid-prized computer and that's all I ever buy for myself. My husband has his own computer as well.

If your brother-in-law thinks the expense is reasonable, than it’s reasonable for him.

Many families with multiple children older than 7 get by with one computer. Or one television, or one bathroom, etc. There’s nothing wrong with taking turns. Then again, some parents want every child to have his own stuff. That’s a matter of personal preference. pregnancy question and answersNewborn&Baby

Perhaps your brother-in-law really believes it’s necessary for a 4-year-old to own a personal computer. Perhaps he’s pleading poverty in an effort to draw attention to his new toys, just as someone in the office might complain about the payments on their feature-loaded new SUV. And perhaps he now regrets spending the money.

This is neither your problem nor your business. Don’t worry about what your brother-in-law does, and unless you like picking fights, don’t criticize him for the purchase.

We have one computer and it's a desktop.

My kids take turns, if they even use the computer. What does a 7- and 4-year-old need a computer for? To play games, really is all. And I think that my kids will use their time better doing other things like creating works of art at the art table we have or playing dress-up and using their imaginations or playing outside. A computer is nothing more than a baby-sitter for kids, just like TV. content from pregnancy question and answersRenting&RealEstate

My kids are 7, 6, 4 and 2. The 7-year-old doesn't ever need the computer for school and I doubt he will until he is in the upper grades of elementary school, 4th grade on. Before then, there is hardly a need for a computer for schoolwork.

Once we decide to buy our children a computer they will both be getting their own. For right now my son plays games on ours (at times) and we are looking at getting a computer for the living room so that the kids can occasionally play on it (but mostly for a media station in the home). Growing up my brothers both had to share a computer and they really hated it because one would get into a game and be on it for hours or one would have a huge paper to write and would take up the computer for days on straight etc... With computers being such a highlight in even schooling these days (for example every paper needing to be typed but the teachers don't always allow you to have time at school to type it up you gotta find a way to do it yourself or having to do computer research papers) its very important for every child just to have their own personal computer. Once my oldest hits 10 he will have his own computer but unless we find him needing one before then (currently 7) were not gonna dish out $2000 to buy him one because were only an apple family. Now if we were a PC family they both would already have one (since you could buy 2 top of the line PC's for 1 decent macbook pro or iMac).

My husband, daughter and I have one computer in our home - that is all we need. Careers_Employment pregnancy.yifei8.netParenting

I think my husband may buy a lap-top for me for Christmas, but it will be to make working from home, and elsewhere, more convenient, but it isn't necessary.
