Yes cereal is a good one to start with. I would mix a couple table spoons in my son's 8 oz bottle 2 times a day. When you start him on food (preferably veggies first) you can mix in some rice cereal to thicken it up.

Ok so my theory is that while baby cereals isn't necessary, no food is actually necessary at 6 months, it all about experience taste and texture. I did give my daughter baby cereal for the 1st few days of starting her on solids. I chose to do this as the cereal itself is pretty bland in flavour, so by mixing it with my daughters usual milk it made it taste familiar while she got used to the experience of actually having food in her mouth.
Like I say though, this was personal choice, it worked well for my daughter, but then she may have been fine if I went straight in with a fruit or veg. There is no wrong or right, go with what you feel is best for you and your baby. Good Luck, starting solids is a fun and messy time!

This is what i was told with my first child and I stuck to.
Order for feeding a baby solids
cereal;
Rice cereal for a week
next oatmeal
next barley or mixed grain cereal.
Then veggies;
green beans
peas
squash
carrots
sweet potatoes
then fruit;
Peaches
pears
applesauce
bananas
I tried each ones a day for a a week. Only small amounts to check for allergic reactions. Once baby had had them all I increase it to twice a day and often mixed fruit into the cereal. My kids always got cereal in the mornings and sometimes for dinner also. Remember the baby food/cereal is used to get them use to food and they still need formula/breast-milk often. Also no baby meat, complete meals(stage 3;s and some stage 2's), pineapples,or tomatoes until 8-10 months old.

Mother of 4 children and a angel son in heaven.
Your choice.
Rice cereal is cheap and convenient and easy to feed in the small amounts that a new eater often wants at first. So it can be handy to start with.
On the negative side, it's very bland (so some babies don't like it) and it's constipating and doesn't really introduce baby to new tastes (which is the main point of solids at first).
So, while it certainly isn't 'necessary' (it used to be back when babies were mostly fed on home-made formula and needed the extra iron -- but not today if your baby is breastfed or taking commercial formula), it's not actively harmful or 'bad.' Again -- your choice.
And, if you do choose to start with it, you may or may not opt to continue it. If baby enjoys it, you coudl continue to offer it occassionally. If he's indifferent -- toss the rest of the box.
EDIT: Steph's advice is a bit puzzling. She lists 12 first foods and says she offered each one for a full week before moving on to the next. Which meant, apparently, that her baby was 9 months old before he got through all the stage one jars. MOST babies are of babyjars and on table foods by 9 months. There is certainly no need to offer new foods for a full week -- 2-3 days is more than ample to check for bad reactions. And there is no set order in which you have to feed them. Sounds like her doctor was very old fashioned and rigid in his advice.

yes that wat every doctor recommended giving there children as a first food. its healthy and its tasteless. go for less sweet stuff like peaches or apple so they learn what is heather for them and they want more veggies and meats before you stat them on sweet stuff but yes rice cereal is great for first time feedings.. you can survive off of rice.. it is soo nutrient.

its up to you it wont hurt to do that. i started with rusk for my son for mabee 3-4 days, it was just to ensure he knew how to feed from a spoon. then once he knew what to expect from the spoon i moved onto veggies.
you can just start with veggies if u like. it doesnt really matter.
