Why would you run out of milk?
I Am planning on exclusively BF so i am not going to bother getting bottles and sterilisers and formula 'just in case'. I was talking to my friend the other day and she said "but what if you run out of milk and it is in the middle of the night and you can't feed?" What are you going to feed your hungry baby who is crying?
This got me wondering - is it common to run out of milk?? x

answer:
This does not happen to healthy mammals who are nursing on demand, end of story.
What can happen:
-- Mom doesn't know how milk production works; Mom thinks "Oh, I'm not getting engorged anymore" and decides she has "run out." Not true! (1) Everyone stops getting engorged after the initial overproduction; one's supply levels off to exactly what baby needs and no more, (2) Breasts are -- and here is the biggest clue that your friend doesn't know what she's talking about -- NEVER EMPTY. They are constantly making milk. One could nurse 24/7; the milk would just continue letting down
-- Mom starts to slip in bottles and use formula; the breasts get the message that the milk is not needed, and the supply really does start to diminish
-- Babies nurse more frequently during growth spurts to up the milk supply; if Mom doesn't nurse on demand, the supply will diminish as, again, the breasts aren't getting the appropriate message -- making milk is all about the demand for it
