So if your 10 year old son was?
Super smart, and super good at sports what would you push him to do? Like be a biologist or surgeon. Or be an NBA or NFL player? Plus he was going to be tall because his brother is tall and his brother plays basketball for a D1 on a scholarship. So his brother even said he's way better then him at that age. But his white grandad always wants him to be a surgeon or biologist. Shouldn't you just push him to do what he wants to do?
answer:
(shrugs)
I would do nothing. You can't tell how tall a ten year old will be. You can't tell if he will have the faintest interest in medicine or biology. To be honest, you can't even tell if he'll be particularly bright at an adult level. And what on earth does his grandad's skin colour have to do with anything?

I think helping, encouraging, supporting sound better than "pushing". You should be there anytime your son needs you. He's only 10 and and at this age they're dreaming about being astronauts or famous NBA/NFL players, firemen or climbing the Everest, famous brain surgeons or formula 1 pilots... At this age he's still building his foundation and this is where you should help (with schools, sports, etc.). If he's smart and talented and has a good base to start from he'll be anything he chooses to be and will not disapoint you.
I agree with your first poster. Don't push him at all! If by "push" you mean to encourage him, then it makes way more sense to encourage him to follow a path that's more realistic than professional sports (in my opinion). There are so many factors involved in being chosen for a pro team, you never know if success will be achieved. I'm sure there are lots of guys out there that can play ball as well as any of the pros, but just didn't get selected.
A physician or biologist is a way more sure thing. If he has what it takes to get through medical school and a surgical residency he can make a good living and support a wife and family. Now, that's assuming he has interest in science. He may not. But if he's a smart kid with ambition, whatever he chooses he'll be a success. You're a lucky man to have him (and his brother) for your sons!

You don't "push him" to do anything. You let him decide what he's good at and what he wants to be. Then you give him your love and support him as he tries to become what he wants to be. Trust me, if you push him into any career or lifestyle he doesn't want, he will resent you for the rest of his life.

If my son had an IQ of 200 and could play for the NBA at the age of 12 and his dream job was to be a burger flipper, then I'd be cool w/ that.
Okay, so I doubt it would be THAT far, but in answer to your question: No. I never have and never will push my children to do anything. If they want to do it, I will support whatever it is 110%.

Mother Of Five (22y/o, 16y/o, 11y/o, 2y/o & 2y/o)!
obviously this is a little kid writting not the dad. Just look at his pov. He probably just doesn't want anyone to know because 10 year olds aren't supposed to have yahoos. Plus he said "white granddad" what adult would say that? Probably a mixed kid who's used to separating his grandparents by race. So kid I say go for whatever you want. If it's ball give 100%. I wanted to be a pro footbal player my whoke life. I couldn't even get a D2 scholarship. I'm now studying to be a teacher. Nothing wrong with a kid chasing a dream as long as you give 100% you won.
Don't push. Never push. Just let him be and do what he wants to do, from sports to academic. Will give him a chance to figure out what he enjoys and what is not so nice. All equipment needed he (repeat), he can beg, steel or borrow before investing in the genuine very expensive stuff. Had three boys that went through that scenario.
Peace.
P.S. Mother pushed me and later I said: "Up yours" and did nothing.

You encourage him to develop all of his talents and let him decide the path his life takes. You also encourage him to explore new areas, like music.
I recommend to lean toward the intelligence side and not to get his hopes up of being a pro sports player.
