Is it safe to send meat in my son's lunch at school

Is it safe to send meat in my son's lunch at school?
My son has an insulated lunch bag, but still has four hours between the time he goes to school and the time he eats lunch. Is it safe to give him ham or turkey sandwiches? He can't have peanut butter, since a child in his class is allergic to peanuts. What other types of sandwiches can I make for him?

I have the same problem with no peanut butter. So I freeze the sandwich container over night (empty) and put a small ice pack in the lunch bag for the day. It works for us and she says her fruit and juice stay cold as well.
Hope that helps...

i pack my husbands lunch at 4 am....they eat around noon, his lunch pail stays in the hot truck until then... i put in enough of the ice packs to last him, and freeze a couple bottles of water, it keeps it cold, and is even still pretty cold when he gets home at 7-8 pm. (and he isnt dead yet hehe)... so in a cool school building i think one of the blue ice packs would be fine to keep anything you want to keep until lunch. :-)

ham, turkey etc will be fine. If you are really worried get one of those blue gel ice packs, they cost a few bucks but will keep things cool. Careers_Employment pregnancy.yifei8.netParenting

Have you tried other nut butters? Almond and cashew are really good, and will not irritate a peanut allergy.

Freeze the sandwich overnight. It will thaw by lunchtime. That is what my Mom did for us (we didn't have a hot lunch program until high school). Mayo is the only thing she didn't include in sandwiches. I still do this when we go on long car trips.

sure, itll be fine, any kind of meat as long as its less then like 12 hours and is in a isolated area where large amounts of bacteria wont get to it (inside a plastic bag).

yes if they have a cold place to put it!
